Everyone has heard of the wrestler Tito Santana, but not everyone remembers that before he became famous with the WWF, he averaged nearly 30 points a game at Mission High and also played professional football.
Known as Merced Solis back then, he was a big, strong and versatile athlete at Mission in three sports, football, basketball and track. Before graduating in 1971 he averaged 27.9 points per game as a senior and had numerous scholarship offers.
He decided to play football at West Texas State University and went on to make the rosters of the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL and British Columbia Lions of the CFL in 1975.
Solis is best known as the wrestler Santana, a four-time champ who performed worldwide for 17 years and appeared in his own television cartoon series. He reached the pinnacle of the sport by being inducted into the WWE Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2004.
