Rivas was a sports physician for the McAllen ISD for more than 20 years and has also served as a ringside physician for more than 20 years in professional and amateur boxing.
He has been very active in the community in such sports as mountaineering, fencing, cycling, spelunking, yachting, running, hunter jumping, polo and scouting.
Rivas retired as a physician in 2018.
